KFC and Oreo Made Chicken-Flavored Cookies. Is This Marketing Genius or Just Weird?

In Today’s Chicken News You Didn’t Ask For…

I was today years old when I realized China has its own Oreo brand. And it actually teamed up with KFC, the brand formerly known as Kentucky Fried Chicken to release a fried chicken flavored Oreo cookie.

KFC and Oreo Made Chicken-Flavored Cookies. Is This Marketing Genius or Just Weird?

Yes, you read that right. They replaced the classic sweet, creamy white filling with one that tastes like the chicken brand’s original recipe. For you younger generations, this is their OG 11 herbs and spices that Colonel Harland Sanders perfected back in 1939.

Ironically, it’s part of KFC’s “Playful Time Travel” collection. Released on July 31, 2026, only China will have the pleasure of experiencing the cookie where one wafer features the KFC logo instead of both wafers having the Oreo mark.

I’m not quite sure what this has to do with time travel. But here we are.

Playful Time Travel Flavors Won’t Be Gracing America

Along with the strange cookie release, the Playful Time Travel collection also includes a “Retro” popcorn flavor. But for Americans who want to try the fried chicken flavored cookie, you’ll have to find a third party importer. Good luck with that!

Either way, both brands are becoming known for adding strange flavors to their food catalogs:

  • In 2025, KFC transformed its world-famous creamy gravy into a Hackney Gelato style ice cream. The brand also recently gave its fans a specialty Simpsons menu featuring a Squishee drink and a donut style burger.
  • For Thanksgiving 2025, Oreo graced the public with a holiday tin filled with “ Cranberry Sauce, Pumpkin Pie, Turkey & Stuffing, Creamed Corn, Sweet Potato, and Caramel Apple Pie flavors.” And on April Fool’s Day 2026, it had the nerve to sell cookies made with real dill pickles.

Are Limited Edition Flavors a Growing Trend?

Over the years, big name brands have launched droves of limited edition flavors instead of creating high-quality products the public will actually love long-term.

But how do you feel about this trending marketing scheme? Does it really help reel in new customers while retaining old ones? I mean… does it keep you trying new things or actually coming back for more?

Well, according to my marketing expertise, these are just some of the reasons brands try to pique the interests of consumers with these unconventional flavor tactics:

  • They help generate free publicity from news outlets and social media
  • Oftentimes, they go viral and get people talking about the brand… but not always in a good way
  • These promos create a sense of urgency because the product won’t be around for long
  • They attract customers who want to try something unusual, but don’t actually come back to feast on their regular menu items

Do Bizarre Food “Fusions” Help or Hurt Big Name Brands?

How do Americans feel about these “limited time” fusion flavors? Well, in one recent Reddit discussion about limited-edition foods, people were split into a few camps:

  • “I buy them just because they’re new.”
  • “I’ll try one, but I’d never buy it again.”
  • “Limited edition is just a marketing gimmick.”
  • “Sometimes the limited flavor is actually better than the regular one.”

If you know anything about Reddit, you know that their word is bond! Or more like notoriously chaotic. Lol 😂 (Just kidding)

But according to them, American consumers seem willing to try strange concoctions like these. But whether that translates into long-term loyalty is another question.

Is the Fried Chicken Flavored Oreo the Wave of the Future?

Brands used to compete by making good products. Now many compete by creating viral moments on social media.

What’s for dinner? WOW Chicken Life has the answer.

Does this attention equal success? Are customers remembering brands for ingenious creations, or just the weird thing they did to destroy their own classic products?

Maybe the fried chicken Oreo is genius. Or maybe it’s just downright disgusting. The real test will be whether anyone remembers it six months from now.

If Oreo brought the fried chicken flavored Oreos to the U.S., would you try it? And would you actually dunk it in milk for old times sake?
